Srinagar, Jan 19: Hundreds of casual laborers working in Power Development Department (PDD) are up in arms against the department for failing to ensure safety of workers who die due to electrocution.
They were especially agitating against the death of Muhammad Yaseen Khanday son of Ghulam Muhammad of Arampora Pattan, working as Lineman in the department who died after he came in contact with a live wire while repairing a HT line at Matipora village last week.
“During last 10 years, 50 causal labors have died due to current and they get no or meager compensation, 150 workers have become totally handicapped,” said Irshad Ahmad Bhat, Kashmir province President of All J&K PDD Casual Laborer Union.
“Why we labors are always killed and our officers rest in chairs, many commissions have been constituted till date but nothing substantial was achieved on ground,” said Ali Muhammad, adding, “Committees give reports that the workers had taken medicines and were drunk.”
They demanded full compensation to the deceased and injured workers.
Protestors said that delegations of the Union have met many times with the concerned authority to get their issues resolved but most of times they have received only assurances. Chief Engineer has formed a committee to give report about recent death of worker, they said.
They also raised the issue of their wages. “If our wages are not released till February 15 we will stage protest with our families in front of Governor’s residence,” said the angry workers.
