‘We will intensify agitation if government remains mum’
Srinagar, Jan 22: The contract workers of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) staged a protest against the indifferent attitude of the government and denial of justice to the employees on Tuesday in Press Enclave.
It was carried under the banner of All J&K MGNREGA Contract Workers.
They demanded the regularization of their services after the seven years of working as contract workers.
“Government had issued SRO 255 under which contractual workers are regularized under Govt. Order N.131=RD/PROF on 26th march, 2014 but why we are still left out,” asked Syed Jaffar, a causal labour.
They asked a question to the government that what will happen to those who have already crossed the 40-years age and are still contractual.
“During Sixth Pay Commission the salaries of Government employees have been increased manifold but the MGNREGA workers got hike of Rs 500,” they said, stating the salary paid to them was not enough to meet the daily expenses and requirements of their families due to high cost index of essentials, standard of living.
“This was a bad joke to increase the salary by Rs 500 in today’s dearer period,” said Gulshana Akhtar, adding “Dozens among us are Post Graduates and the government is playing kicks with us.”
They still draw the salary of Rs 4500 which makes it hard for them to help run their family for a month.
The workers also demanded that they hold every right to be recruited first in new CD Blocks but government is giving priority to outsiders.
NREGA employees said the authorities were asleep while the employees were suffering. They have threatened to intensify their agitation in case their demands not met.
