Srinagar, Jan 27: Alleging that the contractor who posted them as caretakers decamped with the money meant for their remuneration, dozens of persons Tuesday staged a protest demonstration at Press Enclave here.
Raising slogans in favour of their demands, the protesters threatened to close down the operations of the BSNL towers in the valley from January 31 in case officials fail to intervene in the matter and release their withheld wages.
“We were hired by a contractor and posted as tower caretakers at different places against the remuneration Rs 4750 per month. The contractor has not paid our wages from February 2014,” alleged Muhammad Ashraf, a protester.
He added that the term of contract of the contractor in question has come to an end recently and BSNL authorities have now hired new contractor.
“We have taken up our grievance and demand with the BSNL higher ups but they expressed their helplessness,” said the protesters.
When contacted the concerned contractor, Mr Deepak, he said: “We have transferred the payment in one of their representative’s ‘Rustam Ali khan’ bank account and we have receipt of that.”
