People block Kanipora road, stage demos against PDD

SRINAGAR: The residents of KhosaBagh, Baghati Kanipora blocked the road and staged a protest against the Power Development Department (PDD) for plunging the area into darkness for past over a week. Hundreds of people including women took to streets and expressed the resentment against PDD over unscheduled power cuts despite being a metered area.
This Road is a key link for residents of Pulwama and Shopian to get their patients reach in time to SMHS and SKIMS. During this created traffic mess, one ambulance from Shopian was seen to get stuck for few minutes before Police from Nowgam station reached and cleared the path.
“Initially, the curtailments would be for a few hours during daytime but now this has been extended round-the-clock,” said Raja Bano, a resident of KhosaBagh. Kanipora residents said the power has been off since last few days. “We got power supply for not more than 10 minutes since last evening,” the locals complained. One of the protesters Umar Rashid told Rising Kashmir: “In last six months the colony transformer developed some technical snag six times and each time we fix money for every household to get it repaired but since last seven days, we are getting power for mere few minutes putting people to inconvenience.” Academic as well as competitive exams of the students are overhead. People are seen shivering in the cold and whole area plunges into darkness, but ironically, the PDD authorities are using dilly-dallying tactics to provide regular service, they said. They added that inaction of the PDD has forced them to take to streets. The police later on pacified them and took few with them to the office of power authorities.
Meanwhile, the locals have appealed the Cabinet Minister and MLA Javid Mir and Minister of State for Power Muhammad Ashraf Mir to look into the matter.
