Nowgam residents blocked the busy Pulwama-Srinagar road on Monday morning causing lot of traffic mess.
They were demanding basic amenities. The residents were raising slogans against Public Health Engineering (PHE) department.
“We are without water from last 20 days. Hardly there is a drop of water that falls from tap. Even if sometime, God forbidden, there is some water, that would be as impure as water from our drains,” alleged protesters.
Located on the outskirts of the Srinagar city, Nowgam has become a hub of protests.
“Every now and then people resort to protests here to get their genuine demands fulfilled but during protests any official would come here and then forget what he had come for and same applies to our concerned MLA,” decried residents.
The residents also blamed government for lack of drainage mechanism.
“Such is the condition of our drainage that water comes back to our homes,” alleged residents.
They also appealed Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Minister of State for Power Development to reduce their electricity tariff rates.
Station house Officer (SHO), Nowgam Police station, Tariq Ahmad said he has pacified the protesters after calling PHE officials. “They had blocked the road and now the road is again open.”
Nazir Ahmad, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), PHE Lal Nagar Chanapora reached the spot and assured the residents to solve the water scarcity problem. “I will solve this within 24 hours.”
