NYC’s Hunger strike continues for 6th day; several fall ill, hospitalized
‘6000 youth seek safe future’
While the PDP-BJP government continues to be in a “denial” mode in addressing the demands of thousands of ‘National Youth Corps’ volunteers, scores of protesting volunteers have been hospitalized on the sixth day of their ongoing hunger strike.
“No one from government side has visited us here so far,” NYC volunteers told Rising Kashmir.
Though the Ministry of youth affairs Government of India in association with the state government in order to engage the educated un-employed youth as Volunteers under ‘National Youth Corps’ scheme on an honorarium of Rs 2500 per month evoked a good response with thousands of educated un-employed youth applying for it.
More than eight thousand youth on meritorious basis were selected in J&K under this scheme in 2010. These volunteers were deployed and assigned different jobs in several departments including Health, Rural development department, Social welfare, LAWDA, Education, Traffic and Disaster management.
But thousands of volunteers possessing qualification of 10+2, graduates, post graduates, Diploma holders were disappointed after they were shown the doors by the then government after completing their two year term. Since then the unending protests by NYC volunteers at different levels hasn’t yield anything till now. These volunteers held a month long hunger strike at Janta Mantar in New Delhi to press for their demands including regularization of their services earlier this year.
These NYC volunteers are presently on an indefinite hunger strike at Pratap park Srinagar demanding the implementation of the cabinet order 192/ CIR/2014 dated 22-10-2014 and secretary education vide order no 737-EDU of 2014 to engage 6000 youth as contingent workers in school education department against the vacancies created in newly 800 upgraded schools of state passed by the previous government.
The hunger strike of the NYC’s continued for the 6th day on Sunday as several NYC volunteers including state president NYC were hospitalized after they fall ill.
According to the NYC volunteers they have been on roads for the last more than two years but state government or central government has failed to take any measure to redress their grievances. They said that the future of 6,000 NYC volunteers is at stake as state government has turned a deaf ear to their genuine demands. ” NYC volunteers were not appointed through backdoor but recruited under a transparent policy to serve in fourteen different departments” President NYC Asif Ali Bhat told Rising Kashmir. He said that almost all the volunteers who were appointed the scheme left their studies mid way adding that the volunteers worked day and night for two years. He further said that dozens of NYC volunteers have fallen ill and have been hospitalized adding that if anything untoward happened all responsibility will be on government. “It is unfortunate that there has been no official communication from the government neither any one from government have visited us till now “the protesting NYC volunteers said. NYC volunteers urged the State Government to consider the case of NYC volunteers sympathetically to save their future. “If the government can extend the retirement age of employees and give other benefits to them, why they are reluctant to absorb us” a volunteer Waseem Ah said.
